Madrid Ski!

For those living in Madrid skiing is the winter pursuit of many. Between November and April it is as though the bars and terrazas of central Madrid have been picked up and dropped at the top of a mountain!

The beautiful national reserves of "Valdesqui" and "La Pinilla" are the winter hideaway for ski mad Madrid.

Both resorts have all the facilities you would expect to find in the larger Alpine or Pyrennean resorts. Ski / Snowboard hire, Ski Clothing Hire, Modern lift systems, ski bars and restauratnts and of course Hotel accomodation for those wanting a longer stay.

La Pinilla

Getting there:

  • Leave Madrid on the N-1 going North
  • Pass over the Puerto Somosierra (Mountian pass)
  • From the base of the mountain the resort is signposted Exit 104
  • total journey time approx 50 minutes

Public transport:

  • During the Madrid ski season a shuttle bus runs between Riaza and La Pinilla
  • To get to Riaza a daily coach service runs from Madrid.

  • Madrid - Riaza:9.00 / 17.00 / 19.30 service only on Fridays

Resort description:

With over twenty five differnt runs of all abilities being served by 11 ski lifts La Panilla is the smaller of the two Madrid ski resorts. This does not detract from its 12,000 people per hour capacity which is regularly reached during holiday weekends.

Managed by the national parks commission the surrounding, undeveloped terain provides wonderful views whilst cutting into virgin powder! As with just about every activity in Spain Children are well catered for.

The 2006/07 season prices have not been released yet however the 05/06 pricing is included here as a guide:

  • 1 full day ski pass - €28 High season
  • 1 full day ski pass - €20 Low season
  • High season was defined as: Weekends, Holidays, Easter 3-11th Dec and 24 Dec to 9th Jan

Valdesqui

Getting there:

  • Leave Madrid on the A-6 going North West
  • Leave at junction 47 signposted Guadarama
  • Continue on the M-614 and pass through Los Molinos
  • Follow signposting to the resort
  • Total journey time approx 55 minutes

  • Only available by Rail on the regular Madrid Cercanias service to Cotos from Madrid.

Resort description:

Valdesqui has twenty nine different runs made up of 12 beginner, 14 easy and 3 intermediate. There are no difficult runs making this resort ideal for teaching someone to ski or if you are worried about your childrens abilities. Siyuated in a mountain bowl sixteen lifts or tows take you to the start of each run.

If you are looking for difficult skiing or are a more accomplished skier this is not the resort for you!
