Train Madrid BarcelonaMadrid Barcelona by train has recently (May 2008) improved dramatically due to the completion of the high speed train line connecting downtown Madrid and Barcelona in only just over 2 and a half hours. With 20 trains a day each way the route has been competing hard with the airlines especially with the benefit of no baggage restrictions and city center access points.

Tickets start at 100€ for a single or 150€ for a return but advance purchase can yield fares as low as 60€ one way. Tickets may be booked through .Renfe

In addition to the high speed service there is also a Madrid Barcelona and Barcelona Madrid night train which departs from each station at 2200 and arrives the next morning at 0730. This train is considerably cheaper at 40€ for a single or 60€ for a return and offers the chance to save on a nights hotel accomodation at the same time. The "preferente" class is around 50% more but offers better comfort for sleeping the night away!
